Gardening :: GoGreen Farms-Tuberose Basics (Page 1 of 2)

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa) is an aromatic flower widely grown in the plains of India and blooms profusely during the summer and rains. The name reflects the fact that the plant is grown from tubers; hence, tuber-ose (and not tube-rose). Like gladioli these are tall flowers with stem length of 80 to 100 cm and spike length of 30 cm in medium size. The large size has stem length of 100 to 120 cm with spike length of about 40-45 cm. The stem contains waxy white flowers (Double Pearl) and pure white flowers (Single Mexican) borne in pairs along the spike. Apart from the flower and bulbs which have good commercial value, the essential oils extracted from tuberose are widely used in perfume industry. As its Indian name indicates “Rajanigandha” (rajani-night, gandha-fragrance) emits its enchanting fragrance all through the night.

The demand for tuberose bulbs and flowers is on the rise in the European Union which is the largest importer of tuberose bulbs. The countries that DIY import the bulk of the tuberose bulbs are the Netherlands, UK, Italy, Spain and Germany, while Poland is a potentially upcoming market. Tuberose bulbs are in great demand in the USA also.

The two well-known tuberose varieties are Single Mexican and The Double Pearl. The former is preferred for its enticing fragrance, while the Double Pearl is preferred in flower arrangements due to the density of the flowers on its spikes. The Pearl also exudes fragrance characteristic of the tuberose, but to a lesser extent than the Single creative outdoor designs Mexican variety. Several Indian hybrid varieties are also widely grown. Notable among these are Rajat Rekha and Swarna Rekha in single flowered and double flowered tuberose respectively. In Rajat Rekha there are silvery white streaks along the middle of the blade, while golden-yellow streaks are there on the margins of the blade in Swarna Rekha (rajat meaning silver and swarna meaning gold in Hindi). There are other varieties also like Prajwal (Single) and Vaibhav (Double).

Tuberose is easy to propagate, requires minimum maintenance and yields flowers for about three years once bulbs are planted. The bulb size is graded in a similar way as in gladiolus. In India, with ordinary 6/8 and 8/10 size bulbs it is possible to harvest flowers regularly for three years with a single beautiful gardens batch of bulbs. Large size bulbs are highly priced and in great demand. Since it is a rhizome, you can recover bulbs manifold energy directory and replant or sell them.

The bulbs remain dormant during the winter months in places where the temperature is low and if early planting is desired, the dormancy can be successfully broken by dipping the bulbs in 4% thiourea solution for one hour. Normally, tuberose begins to flower beautiful gardens three months after planting of bulbs. It flowers mainly during the summer and rains (April-September) in India and from May to July on the hills; while in milder climate, it flowers well throughout the year. Harvesting is done from November through March in the Gangetic plains in the sub-Himalayan belt.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Claire Reid is the founder of the Johannesburg-based startup Reel Gardening It produces a biodegradable tape that encases organic seed and fertilizerReid says the strips use 80% less water than traditional gardening methodsEvery week, African Start-Up follows entrepreneurs in various countries across the continent to see how they are working to make their business dreams become reality.

(CNN) — Have you always wanted to have your own garden and grow fresh, healthy food but didn’t know quite where to start? Which vegetable varieties to go for, how far from one another to place the seeds and how much water to use?

That’s also how Claire Reid felt back in 2002, at 16, when her father asked her to plant a garden during her school holidays.

“I was overwhelmed by the amount of seed I had to buy, the amount of fertilizer, the details for your garden wastage,” recalls Reid.

Reid quickly realized that gardening was not made easy for beginners. She was frustrated that she had to measure manually the correct distance between the seeds, as energy directory well as to pay a small fortune to buy what she needed, since everything came in bulk — not to mention the badly written instructions. So Reid then decided to put her young mind to work.

“I wanted to come up with an idea that if I only wanted to plant a meter of spinach, I only needed to buy a meter of spinach,” recalls Reid.

“We are passionate about starting a planting revolution.

Claire Reid, Reel Gardening

After giving it some thought, Reid used baking flour and liquid feritlizer to stick seeds, in calculated intervals, onto newspaper strips. She then went on to plant the strips in furrows. The experiment worked and Reid was encouraged by a school teacher to present her idea into an expo for young South African scientists — Reid’s project won the gold medal.

“I was a 16 year old girl that was barely passing science in school and the concept of me becoming a businesswoman was quite absurd,” says Reid.

Yet, that high school idea has grown today to become Reel Gardening, an award-winning patented invention aiming to simplify food gardening and make it more effective.

Launched in 2010, Reid’s Johannesburg-based startup produces a paper strip that that comes pre-packaged with seeds and organic fertilizers. These are spaced at the right depth and distance apart so they can be easily planted and maintained. The tapes, which are sold in reels, are packed by hand and cost $1 per meter.

“We are passionate about starting a planting revolution,” says Reid, whose packaged seed strips grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. “So we enable anyone to be able to grow vegetables — with little space, little education and little water.”

Reid says her biodegradable strips use 80% less water than traditional gardening methods, because they require water only at the exact location of each seed. And that’s one reason why she shares her product with people in urban slums where water is less available. So far, more than 120 community and school gardens have sprouted up with Reid’s help.

There are 11 official languages in South Africa so the young entrepreneur uses simple pictures on the products’ packaging to overcome language and literacy obstacles.

“It tells you exactly where to water, all the nutrition is already in there,” says Reid, who sells her planting strips throughout South gardening Africa. “Birds can’t eat the seeds out of the soil; water can’t move the seed; and you only need to plant as much as you have space for.”

Looking ahead, Reid is determined to see Reel Gardening grow, even outside South Africa.

“We are hoping to be live in the UK, selling on the 1st of May,” she says.

Wood Skewer vs. Metal Skewer?

The metal ones as they do get hot and allow energy suppliers the meats on the skewers to cook from the outside and the inside via the hot skewers. They are not for serving though so that could be a problem.

The bamboo ones, unless soaked for one hour in water have a tendancy to burn through.

The best solution is use the metal ones to cook the meats and veggies then run a bamboo one through the opposite direction and pull everything from the metal ones for serviing if you insist on having the skewers for energy directory show. Otherwise put all of the food on huge serving plates and serve that way…This looks plants really impressive piled high with all the different veggie colors and meat.

Pilot life – time away from home?

The fact is, starting wages at a regional airline are around $20,000 and about $35,000 at the major airlines. That’s worse than what a manager at MacDonalds earns. It takes many years flying smaller airplanes, such as at a regional airline in order to get hired by a major airline. Then, it takes many heating more years to become captain where the $100,000+ salaries are earned. The fact is, 50% of all major airline pilots earn less than $78,000 per year, and 50% of all regional airline pilots earn less than $40,000 per year. Only 5% of major airline pilots earn more than $140,000 and it easily takes 25 years from leaving college to reach that level of earnings. So it isn’t really all that amazing.

Only 3% of airline pilots in the USA are women. One reason is that it is very wood hard to have a family and also have a flying career because you have to dedicate so much time to becoming a pilot and building a career. In the flying business, job comes first and family comes second. It would only be viable if you had a LOT of family support. for child care. Do you really want to trust someone else to raise your children? That’s what it comes down to because airline pilots average 50% of their time away from home. It ranges from about 120 to about 200 days a year on the road. Working hours are typically 10 to 14 hours long, which is why pilots usually only work 3-4 days a week. If you don’t live near creative outdoor designs your base, commuting gardening to / from home can really eat into your time off with your family too. Also plan on working odd hours (sorry, no nine to five) and lots of weekends and holidays, especially as a low-seniority co-pilot or junior captain.

As for “free travel”, most pilots don’t really use it as much as you’d think, and it is “space available”, meaning you and your family get bumped if there are paying passengers to fill all the seats. Vacation for pilots is pretty much like any other job. It takes awhile to build up to having a lot of vacation time. They do not get huge chunks of time off unless they are very senior.

Here’s a typical timetable for a career: Age 18-22: college and flight school. Plan on spending $150,000 to $250,000 for training and a college education. Age 23-25, low paid entry-level job such as flight instructing earning about $20k per year. Age 25-33, regional airline, earning between $25k and $40k. Age 33+, major airline co-pilot, starting at $35k and working your way up. Age 45 to 50+, major airline captain earning $100k+.

Keep in mind that there is no guarantee you will ever get hired by a major airline. Roughly 50% of civilian-trained pilots never make it that far because more than half of DIY Safety all airline pilots are ex-military.
